A STUDY ON POTENTIAL BEACH TOURISM IN KANNUR
Tourism is one of the largest and fast-growing industries in the world today. Tourism denotes the temporary and short movement of the people to destinations outside the places where they normally live and work. It is an economic activity capable of earning valuable foreign exchange, generating employment, stimulating infrastructural development and paving the way for overall growth of a region.
The significance of tourism has been recognized in developing and developed countries. This can be seen from the establishment of government departments of tourism, wide spread encouragement and sponsorship of tourist development programs and the small business and multinational corporations contributing to the deriving benefits from the tourism industry. India is not a country but a continent as far as the tourist attractions are concerned.
There is peace in the Indian countryside. There is music and dance. The cuisine is authentic and richly varied. Hence tourist flow to India is growing year by year. Kerala the ‘Gods own country’, officially announced tourism as an industry in 1986.
The state is growing as an amazing tourist destination. Kerala enjoys unique geographical features that have made it one of the most beautiful tourist attractions in Asia. It has an equitable climate in every year, millions of tourists, both domestic and foreign comes to Kerala to visit and enjoy beach, backwaters, mountains, forest, waterfalls, Beach tourism, health tourism, pilgrim tourism, cultural tourism and archaeological tourism are the major divisions of the tourism industries in Kerala. In Kerala beaches are identified as one of the major tourist spots.
Beaches are great resources of tourism. It attracts a large number of domestic and inbound tourist for any country blessed with sea and ocean. For no country in the world can boast of varied climate, dissimilar country sides and rich heritage. India is progressively becoming the favourite destinations of the tourist owing to the efforts of the Government and public to realize the full potential of its vast and varied resources. They want a clear blue vision of the ocean. Long seashore with beautiful beaches. Beaches are the charming destinations that give unique advantages no other destination offers. Beach tourism is one of the earliest modern forms of tourism and top of the tourism industries.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Analysis of the tourism industry reveals that we have not utilized the potential of our beaches in the northern Kerala. Hence the present study tries to explore the beach tourism potentials of Kannur which has be highest number of beaches in Kannur district. Here the topic has been made to study about various beaches in Kannur district, facilities available there and also about negative factors of beach tourism and satisfaction level of beach tourism as perceived by the tourist in the area.
FAMOUS BEACHES IN KANNUR
1. Muzhappilangad beach
At Muzhappilangad beach we find a world class drive-in beach. It is the longest drive in beach in Asia and the only one in Kerala. It is rarely in India, since the country itself does not have many drive-in beaches. It is protected by cluster of rocks, the beach great for swimming too. Muzhappilangad is 15km south of town
2. Payyambalam Beach
Payyambalam beach is the most popular beach in Kannur This location is known for providing one with the opportunity to simply relax or enjoy a family picnic in absolute Swimming option are also available for those who seek a little adventure. Here a broad beach of mild waves splendidly extends along 40km of city shore line. A sculpture of mother and child by Kanayi Kunjiraman is an attractive feature of the beach garden. There is a small beach next to Payyambalam. Under the beauty of Payyambalam, visitors may fail to notice this beach. Many still notice the funny connotation to its name baby beach.
4. Choottad Beach
Choottad beach is one of the developing tourist places situated in Choottad only 5km away from Pazhayangadi town and 30km from Kannur town. This is the beach waiting to be explored. Right now, it is being accessed by local people as Saturday. Sunday visitors.
